************************************************************************
There are several small group classes available: FUNdamental Basic Courses for puppies under 20 weeks of age, adolescent and adult dogs. Level 2 or Intermediate to Advanced and off lead work.

Group Classes Family members are welcome to come to class for free, and/ or participate each week. However, there must be at least one handler who is consistently there for each week. Young children require the supervision of a responsible adult. Group classes such as the Basic Course or Agility Intro are NOT the place to start dealing with aggression issues and reactive behaviors. If you think you have a dog with aggressive tendencies or if you have behavior concerns, bring them up before signing up with any group class. There ARE other classes and private training available. Aggression is often misunderstaood and requires private instruction to start with. In-home consultations are also available and sometimes necessary. You're welcome to visit and watch the many classes and see for yourself if this is the right course for you and your dog (please leave your dog at home on these occasions).

Course Desciptions - The Basics - Beyond Basics - Agility - Tracking - Nose Work

The Basic FUNdamental classes

The Puppy Basics is designed to be educational, fun and interactive. Family members are encouraged to join in, however if this is not possible, there should be one regular member of the family attending each class. Pups 20 weeks of age and under . . . no previous experience required Correct socialization and manners are achieved with fairness and positive confidence building techniques. . Learn how to understand your dog and how to train in a way that your dog can understand you. Emphasis will be placed on the handler and giving you the tools to shape and build communication between each other. Learn how to handle those challenges such as: nipping and biting, house training, stealing and jumping up on people. Included: Basic Commands ~ hand & voice signals ~ Emergency Recall to COME when called, Sit, Down, Leave It, An introduction to Heel and Manners on the Leash. Time will be spent in each class for problem solving and behavior questions. There will be homework for everyone and yes you too can fit training into your busy schedule. Most important for all of our puppies is the socialization and lots of FUN! 6 x 1 hr. Cost: 180.00

The Basics : For Dogs of All Ages
Happiness is a well trained owner with small classes that allow for more individual attention. Learn to train your dog while developing effective communication skills built on mutual respect and trust. Emphasis will be placed on the handler. Increase your dog’s attention skills, self-control and ability to be calm. Using gentle, modern and effective methods train important behaviors such as: The Emergency Recall to Come When Called, Sit-Stay, Down-Stay, Stand, Leave It, Walk on a Loose Leash and Heel. 6 classes - The Cost: 180.00

Once a handler and pup have accomplished the Basics . . . it's really just the beginning. Some people may want a little time off between classes BUT continue to use their training skills, taking the dog out and about for a variety of experiences. And then there are handlers who feel that they now have a well-behaved dog at home and further training really isn't necessary. (Mostly because the dog is never placed in situations that test the dog's coping skills.) These dogs may face an increased risk for developing problems. Then there are the people who want to enroll their dog into the next class right away. Be thoughtful about your dog's training.

TRACKING and SEARCH SPORTS . . .

My background in tracking comes from years of training and working in Search and Rescue. Currently my interest in molecular scent work and facination with my dog's nose is strong.Tracking is one of my favorite classes to teach! I continue to update my training; attending seminars and taking classes with my own dogs. These days K9 Nose Work is a great new dog sport  nose work ( ask me about that too). First and foremost with all search sports . . . it's all about having fun !

Pre-requisites :
available to dogs of all ages and sizes - a "Sit" is helpful. No previous training is
required.

Tracking is:

  • mentally stimulating
  • stress relieving
  • excellent exercise for high drive dogs
  • opportunity to improve relationships and team work
  • mutually rewarding
Your dog sees the World through his nose! All breeds have an incredible ability and actually need to use their noses. The sensitivity of the canine nose is Stunning! The dog can smell odors with as little as one part per trillion (1 part per 1,000,000,000,000) A large part of their brain is devoted to reading this information received from the nose. Unfortunately most pet dogs get few opportunities to use this ability or find this kind of meaningful activity. Nose work games impact the dog with meaningful activity and purpose. Providing this outlet for the dog’s mental stimulation will contribute greatly to a more relaxed and happy dog. When you tap into this area, you will both learn to work as a team, strengthening your relationship and building confidence. Dogs often find this activity to have a lasting calming effect on them. 6 x 2 hr. classes Max 4 dogs per class

To register call 604 - 931 - 7577 or e-mail: caninespirit@telus.net .

The agility Intro: for dogs who are 1 year of age and older and have completed the Basics. This is one of our more popular agility programs. This is the first level and introduction to agility, handling and learning of equipment.

To register contact Pamela at Canine Spirit:
604 – 931 – 7577 or e-mail:
caninespirit@telus.net

The next course: Begins January 21, 2012

Foundation work must already be in place before starting the next levels of agility. Without basic foundation work you may inadvertently be placing your dog onto the equipment too fast and working on damage control instead of building to a nice smooth run. Agility requires patience and knowing that it's going to take time and practice. The Agility Introduction can help bridge that gap between obedience & agility.

A general guideline and suggestions:

  • 8 - 12 Weeks:
    • In-home Puppy Consultation / Private Training / Group Class / Search Sports

  • 12 - 18 months
    • Take some sort of classes that you both enjoy and continue to improve and enrich your relationship while encouraging correct socialization
  • 24 months
    • Take another course with your adult dog, something you will both enjoy, Work your way upt to the Univeristy Level / Join a dog walking and hiking group / agility club / enter into a therapy program / continue the play and fun for a healthy balanced relationship
